Summer Heat Pet Safety Tips

Summer temperatures continue to rise this week, so please remember to keep your pet’s safety in mind. Before going on a walk, check the temperature of the sidewalk and asphalt. Touch your palm to the surface and count to 10; if you cannot keep your palm to the surface because of the heat, it is too hot for the pet’s paws. In addition, pets with short “pug” noses like Bulldogs, Boxers, Shih Tzus, Pugs, Frenchies, and Boston terrier have added heat-related challenges. The shortened nasal passage usually reduces their ability to breathe in the air, causing them to overheat more quickly than other, longer-nosed breeds. As a result, these pug-nosed dogs tend to become more vulnerable to heat-related problems like heat stroke, which can be life-threatening.

If you have any outdoor animals, we encourage you to bring them inside. If that is not an option, please remember to provide them with ample shade and water. Adding ventilation and cooling systems such as a fan, cooling mats, or air conditioning will help ensure the health and comfort of your pet. Some common signs of heatstroke for dogs are:
-Heavy panting
-Excessive Drooling
-Red or purple gums/tongue
-Glassy eyes
-Their legs staggering or collapsing
Owners should NEVER leave a dog in their car. If you know of an animal in imminent danger, please call your local law enforcement.
